The victim, identified as Abdul Sattar, was a prominent local leader associated with the Karimganj chapter of the Bharatiya Janata Party. His disappearance was reported on the night of October 23rd.

In Silchar, a 47-year-old former panchayat member, missing for three days, was tragically discovered deceased in Karimganj district, Assam, as confirmed by the police on Friday.

The police have identified the victim as Abdul Sattar, a prominent local leader affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, whose disappearance was reported on the night of October 23rd.

Karimganj’s Superintendent of Police, Partha Pratim Das, reported that a murder case was filed following the discovery of Abdul Sattar’s body on Friday. He stated, “There are visible signs of external injuries on various parts of his body, indicating possible torture. In response to the family’s complaint, we have initiated a murder case along with other charges.”

The family of Abdul Sattar has implicated a local Congress leader, identified as Surman Ali, and his associates in the murder. The police are actively investigating this allegation.

Sattar’s family mentioned that on October 23, he was at home when he received multiple calls around 9 pm. He informed his family that he needed to attend an important meeting at the local MLA’s residence.

Abdul Sattar’s family expressed their concern as he did not return home. They attempted to contact him around 12:30 am, but his mobile phone was switched off. Subsequently, they informed the police and other party leaders the following day.

Reporters were told by Abdul Sattar’s son that a group of local Congress leaders had threatened him four months ago. In their complaint to the Patharkandi police, the family named the local Congress leader Surman Ali and his associates, Mukabbir Ali and Sattar Ali, as suspects in the murder.

The police have confirmed that the body has been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for an autopsy.

Sattar’s family members have shared that the body was discovered within a sack with his hands and feet bound. They believe he was killed and his body disposed of in the river with heavy stones.

A noticeable injury mark is present on his forehead, although we are awaiting the postmortem report for further details, as stated by a police officer. Additionally, his hands and feet were found bound.

Krishnendu Paul, the BJP MLA representing Patharkandi, has called for a thorough investigation into the matter. He expressed, “The circumstances surrounding the disappearance of an ordinary person, followed by the discovery of his body in such a condition, strongly suggests it was a murder. The police have already identified the suspects, and we urge their prompt apprehension.
