Haldwani riots: 4 Died, more than 200 wounded, internet services suspended, and schools closed.

Reportedly, four individuals have perished, with more than 200 sustaining injuries in riots incited by the demolition of an illegal madrasa and mosque in Haldwani, Uttarakhand.

In response to the violence that erupted on Thursday, authorities have issued shoot-at-sight orders against rioters. Moreover, internet services and schools have been entirely suspended.

A dispute over an illegal structure in the Banbhoolpura area escalated into a full-blown riot as a state team attempted to demolish the buildings pursuant to a court order. The endeavor faced staunch opposition from a mob, resulting in heightened tensions.

Miscreants hurled stones and ignited several vehicles in the vicinity. To uphold law and order, a curfew has been enforced in Haldwani, while internet services remain suspended citywide. According to the police, the majority of the injured were admitted to hospitals following the unrest in the Banbhoolpura area, where police personnel and municipal workers were engaged in demolishing a local madrasa.

Officials assert that the violence was “premeditated and unprovoked,” alleging that “stones were stockpiled in advance at residences.” Some reports suggest that rioters resorted to petrol bombs. The District Magistrate of the area stated that the situation is presently manageable.

In response to the escalating tension, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami convened a high-level meeting and mandated shoot-on-sight orders for rioters. The contentious structures, Mariyam Masjid in Malik Ka Bageecha locality and a madrasa, allegedly encroached on Nazool land.

Dhami has directed the police to handle disruptive elements firmly and urged the populace to uphold peace.
