Iran has imprisoned two female journalists for their coverage of Mahsa Amini’s tragic passing. The Iran Anti-Hijab Protests gained attention following the tragic death of Mahsa Amini, who died in custody on September 16, 2022, subsequent to her arrest by Tehran’s morality police.

The Iranian judiciary has announced the sentencing of two women journalists who reported on the death of Masha Amini, igniting nationwide protests the previous year. Both journalists have been handed prison terms of up to seven years, as revealed on Sunday.

Following her arrest by Tehran’s morality police for an alleged violation of Iran’s stringent dress code for women, Masha Amini tragically passed away in custody on September 16, 2022, triggering widespread protests throughout the nation.

According to Mizan Online, the judiciary’s website, Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloufar Hamedi, the journalists in question, have been convicted of charges including collaboration with the United States, plotting against state security, and spreading propaganda against the Islamic republic.

Mizan reported that Elaheh Mohammadi, aged 36, received a six-year prison sentence for collaborating with the United States, while Niloufar Hamedi, aged 31, was sentenced to seven years for the same charge. In addition, both individuals were handed five-year terms for conspiracy charges and one-year sentences each for propaganda. These sentences will run concurrently.

Elaheh Mohammadi, a correspondent for Ham Mihan newspaper, and Niloufar Hamedi, a photographer for Shargh newspaper, have been detained in Tehran’s Evin prison since September 2022, and their trials commenced in May.

Mizan noted that the verdicts can be appealed.

This decision comes after Amini’s lawyer, Saleh Nikbakht, was sentenced to one year in prison on Tuesday for charges of propagating against the state and speaking with foreign and domestic media about the case.
