S. Somnath’s Remarkable Journey: From Overcoming Hostel Fees Struggles to Leading ISRO, India’s Premier Space Agency

S. Somnath’s Remarkable Journey: Decades ago, during his time at TKM Engineering College, S. Somnath faced financial hardships that led him to reside in a modest lodge room in Kollam district.

ISRO Chairman S. Somanath has penned his autobiography, “Nilavu Kudicha Simhangal,” which can be loosely translated as “Lions that Quenched the Moonlight.” This captivating narrative chronicles his extraordinary path from humble beginnings to the helm of India’s foremost space research organization.

The inspiration for this book arose from the triumph of Chandrayaan-3, the moon mission led by S. Somanath at ISRO. He intends this book to serve as a source of motivation for those who possess talent but battle self-doubt. Set for a November release, the book is being published by Lipi Publications, based in Kerala.

In reality, it’s the tale of a typical village youth who grappled with the uncertainty of choosing between engineering and BSc. It delves into his dilemmas, the wise choices he made, and the opportunities that came his way in a country like India,” he shared with PTI.

The ISRO chief added that during his early years of study, he had no mentor, and had it not been for a kind soul unexpectedly providing him with an engineering college admission form, he might have pursued a BSc or some other course.

The purpose of the book isn’t to recount my life story; its sole aim is to inspire individuals to pursue their dreams despite life’s challenges,” added the ISRO Chairman.

When asked why he chose to write the book in Malayalam, Somanath replied with a smile, “Because I am a Malayali, and I find more comfort in expressing myself in my mother tongue.”

The book unveils that he grappled with financial difficulties during his time at TKM Engineering College, compelling him to reside in a modest lodge room in Kollam district. To reach the college, he relied on an old bicycle due to financial constraints, even missing out on study tours due to his inability to afford bus fares.

His autobiography delves into his personal life and unfolds his journey within ISRO, culminating with the launch of Chandrayaan-3.
