Sanjay Singh, AAP MP, cries foul, turns himself in after receiving his mother’s blessings

Sanjay Singh’s arrest has left his mother worried, but the AAP MP reassured her that he would return soon.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh, moments before his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case, expressed his outrage at being forcibly detained without evidence. In a recorded video, he shared his thoughts and visited his mother to seek her blessings, a moment now widely circulated on social media.

“This is no way to treat an honest man. If he had done something wrong, he should have been arrested, but the entire nation knows how upright he is. He assured me not to worry; he’ll be back soon,” the mother of the AAP MP conveyed to news agency PTI.

During the ED’s day-long operation, Singh’s wife alleged that the central investigating agency arrived at their home with a predetermined agenda. She stated that officials conducted searches all day but found nothing. “I have faith in God and the judiciary; the truth will prevail, and we will emerge victorious,” said Anita Singh, the wife of the AAP MP. She also asserted that there was undue pressure on the officials and that Singh had been arrested on false grounds.

In the wake of the arrest, Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Jha visited Sanjay Singh’s father to show his support. It’s worth noting that both RJD and AAP are part of the coalition called the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), which has united opposition parties against the ruling BJP in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Dinesh Singh, the father of the AAP MP, shared his sentiments with reporters, saying, “I advised Sanjay to stay strong. His followers stand by him, and we will engage in the democratic process. Ultimately, the truth prevails.”

Sanjay Singh becomes the third AAP leader to be arrested in connection with the money laundering case, following the arrests of Manish Sisodia and Satyendra Jain.

Previously, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning in the liquor policy case, but as a witness.

Could you please provide more context or specify which liquor policy case you are referring to? There have been several cases related to liquor policies in different regions, so more details would help me provide you with an accurate explanation.

In 2021-22, the Delhi government introduced an excise policy with the goal of revitalizing the city’s liquor industry. This policy replaced the previous sales-volume based system with a license fee structure for traders, promising upgraded stores without metal grilles, ultimately aiming to enhance the overall customer experience.

However, this initiative was abruptly halted when Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena requested a CBI probe into alleged irregularities within the regime.

According to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) chargesheet, various pieces of evidence point to the alleged formation of cartels and the payment of kickbacks related to the policy, with the aim of securing investments in Delhi’s liquor business for AAP leadership. The agency also implicated a certain ‘South Group’ in these alleged irregularities.

The ‘South Group’ reportedly includes YSR Congress MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, his son Raghav Magunta, Sarath Reddy (the promoter of Telangana-based Aurobindo Pharma Group), and K Kavitha (the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao). Allegedly, this group exerted control over nine out of the 32 retail liquor zones in Delhi, operating as part of a ‘super cartel’ formed in collaboration with businessman Sameer Mahendru, according to the agency’s claims.
